Paintball Westworld Course

Westworld course from Kelli Manning on Vimeo.

I play paintball out in Forney every saturday. I strapped a GoPro to my gun last week and these are the results.

  1. I want to start this off by saying that I love this genre of video. You get to witness new perspectives and experience life from a different point of view. With all that being said, you took a risk because this genre has been done ad nauseum especially from the iconic distortion of the super-wide angle GoPro. I'm certainly on the fence on whether it worked here or not. I also didn't really understand the juxtaposition of the upbeat jazz music with the intensity of battle; though granted not a real battle. Maybe if you pushed the intensity of the combat further, maybe it would have worked better in that instance. It is hard to tell. Nice editing job though, very clean.

  2. I think the music is very playful, like paintball.

  3. Great editing, I like how classy and kinda sneaky the music is, as opposed to the upbeat war music normally on these kinds of videos. Like the different perspectives you got. Also, the paint splatters are great.

  4. Looks like fun. The music added to it. A day without worrying and just doing what you love to pass time.

  5. Well, I have no idea how this game is played, but your video is good. Nice start. I like your style of shooting. It gives an opportunity to realize viewers actual happening on the playground by those paint splatters.

  6. I find the placement of the camera and the resulting effects of the placement to be the strongest part of this piece. As has been stated, the paint splatters are a great effect, and the same principle has wider experimental uses as well.
My only real concern is that there really wasn't much of a difference between most of the shots that constitute the piece, a downside of using one static camera location.
As an aside, I find the thwip of the paintballs leaving the barrel incredibly amusing for some reason.

  7. I was initially disinterested because of the many gopro videos i've seen. This is nice to watch because of some angles you captured. I like the part where you are in the open and can see your shadow with the paint splatter. That's the part that seemed the most intense.

  8. I didn't know that being at the end of the barrel of a paintball gun would be so interesting and entertaining. From the looks of it you won that game single handed. There are some amazing ways to mount GoPro cameras so make sure you take advantage of that. I think this can be pushed a little further with some basic editing because it felt a little basic being one continuous shot with a somewhat random soundtrack.
